IEEE Orange County Newsletter May 2022

Dear IEEE members,

This last month has been full of events and activities. Virtual events were plentiful and many Chapters have started exploring the return to in-person events. e-Lynx is still the best way to check for upcoming events, and our OC Section website features updates and reports. See below for a list of this month’s highlights.

Best regards,

Recent Past Events

[April 16, 2022] Region 6 Southern Area Mixer (In-person)

https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/308654

Most IEEE volunteer events have been virtual for the past couple years. This mixer gathered volunteers in the Southern Area of IEEE Region 6 to network and casually discuss strategies and ideas for re-engaging on in-person events, or hybrid structures. The Southern Area of IEEE Region 6 is composed of mainly the Southern California geographic portion. The event was hosted at the Common Space Brewery in Hawthorne, CA. The brewery had a nice open patio and allowed attendees to easily mingle. The event had around 15 to 20 attendees. It was a successful event since we had good attendance and volunteers were able to meet in-person.

With all the excitement, I didn’t get a chance to take a group picture, but still managed to at least take a couple pictures.

[April 21, 2022] Meeting and Presentation – PES/IAS Chapter. (In-person)

The meeting was hosted by the IEEE PES/IAS Joint Chapter of Orange County at the Doubletree Club Orange County Airport Hotel in Santa Ana, CA. The event included a social, dinner, discussions about the executive board and IAS standards, and a presentation on AF Generator Decrement method.

[April 21 to 23, 2022] SusTech 2022 (Virtual)

IEEE SusTech 2022

9th IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability

https://ieee-sustech.org/

The 9th IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech 2022) is designed to explore development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It brings together scientists, engineers, technologists and scholars from multiple disciplines to hold a dialogue on environmental issues and collaborate on ideas to develop and utilize innovative tools and intelligent systems to address the need for Sustainable Infrastructure. Attendees will learn about the emerging technologies, latest tools, and proactive solutions to take their sustainability programs to the next level. Papers are solicited from industry, government, and academia (including collegiate students) covering relevant research, technologies, methodologies, tools and case studies. Conference content that meets IEEE quality review standards and format will be submitted for inclusion into the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.

The virtual event featured industry and paper presentations in the 3-day program. Keynote speakers and panels offered industry insight, and academics shared their research on the technical tracks. The Sustainable Aviation forum offered a focused track by gathering experts in the aviation industry.  A student poster competition gave college students the opportunity to present their projects.

I would like to congratulate the IEEE SusTech 2022 organizing committee for such a great event. As with most IEEE conferences, this is a volunteer driven event. If you would like to get involved and contribute to the 2023 event, please reach out to the organizing committee by visiting their website.
