Abstract:
This tutorial will cover serial communications link modeling and equalization optimization, using the public domain, open source tool: PyBERT (https://github.com/capn-freako/PyBERT/wiki).
Topics covered in the talk will include:
Simulation configuration, including:
– bit rate
– modulation scheme (NRZ, Duobinary, or PAM-4)
– noise injection
– channel modeling
– manual equalization setting
– automatic equalization optimization
Complete, as well as partial, link eye diagrams, for the following cases:
– channel only
– channel + Tx de-emphasis
– channel + Tx de-emphasis + Rx CTLE
– complete (channel + Tx de-emphasis + Rx CTLE + Rx DFE)
Jitter distribution and spectrum, for the same 4 cases.
Bathtub curves for the same 4 cases.
Using custom channel models w/ PyBERT.
Using IBIS-AMI models of the Tx/Rx w/ PyBERT.
Bio:
David Banas is a 30-year veteran of the semiconductor industry specializing in system level architectural modeling of both high speed serial communications links and SoCs. He holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder, having been a member of their Optical Computing Systems Center (OCSC). His PyBERT link simulation tool won a spot in EDN Magazine’s Hot 100 Products of 2017 list. (https://www.edn.com/edn-hot-100-products-of-2017-processors-tools/). He currently holds the position of Senior Fellow at Luminous Computing, Inc., where he uses IBIS-AMI models in photonic data transport link simulations.
