WHY ARE LARGE-SCALE LI-ION BATTERIES SO FIRE-PRONE, AND WHAT IS BEING DONE TO IMPROVE THEIR SAFETY?

Bio: Curtis Ashton has 27 years of experience in telecommunications powering and grounding, 4 years of experience in electric utility power generation, and recently moved to a DC services company that is part of a large battery manufacturer, as their Director of Training. He is the present chair of the IEEE PES (Power and Energy Society) ESSB (Energy Storage and Stationary Battery Committee), and serves as chair of 2 of its working group (a joint working group with ASHRAE on ventilation of battery spaces, and a working group on training of battery technicians), as well as a vice-chair or secretary of several other working groups. He also served a term on the IEEE Standards Association RevCom (Standards Review Committee), and is active in his local (Denver) PES-IAS chapter. He formerly served as the vice-president of IEEE PELS (Power Electronics Society) TC (Technical Committee) 7 (Intelec – International Telecommunications annual Energy Conference). He is also the chair of the Battcon (an annual Battery conference) Technical Committee. He has a BSEE degree summa cum laude from Arizona State University. He previously served as the vice-chair of ATIS (Alliance for Telecom Industry Solutions) STEP (Sustainability in Telecom Energy and Protection) standards subcommittees. Mr. Ashton has been published and has presented numerous times at various conferences around the world. In his spare time, he enjoys practicing his Spanish language skills, and refereeing High School soccer and basketball.
