An evening of watching videos regarding management in the modern organization, and how to do it more productively.

We will watch two TED Talks videos, with plenty of time after each talk for audience participation, to discuss the content and its validity in your experience as a manager, project manager or manager understudy.

First Video: “As work gets more complex: Six Rules to Simplify” (TED Institute, 12 minutes). Why do people feel so miserable and disengaged at work? Because today’s businesses are increasingly and dizzyingly complex — and traditional pillars of management are obsolete, says Yves Morieux. So, he says, it falls to individual employees to navigate the rabbit’s warren of interdependencies. In this energetic talk, Morieux offers six rules for “smart simplicity” (rule one: Understand what your colleagues actually do).

First Speaker: Boston Consulting Group’s Yves Morieux researches how corporations can adapt to a modern and complex business landscape. He is co-author of the book “Six Simple Rules: How to Manage Complexity without Getting Complicated.”

Second Video: “Why work doesn’t happen at work” (TEDxMidwest, 15 minutes). Jason Fried has a radical theory of working: that the office isn’t a good place to do it. He calls out the two main offenders (call them the M&Ms) and offers three suggestions to make the workplace actually work.

Second Speaker: Software entrepreneur Jason Fried thinks deeply about collaboration, productivity and the nature of work. He’s the co-founder of 37signals, makers of Basecamp and other web-based collaboration tools, and co-author of the books “Getting Real: The Smarter, Faster, Easier Way to Build a Successful Web Application,” “Rework,” “Remote: Office Not Required,” and “It Doesn’t Have to Be Crazy at Work.”

Facilitator: Carl Angotti of Angotti Product Development will be leading this virtual meeting. He will introduce the videos and lead the discussions. He is a long time IEEE TEMS SCV Board member and past Chair. He has an avid interest in the management of technical engineers, and has led many High Tech projects.
