Safety of Machinery – Does ISO 13849-1:2023 work for you?

Presentation: ISO 13849-1:2023, the fourth edition of the functional safety standard for machinery, was recently published. However, there are several technical flaws and unproven techniques implemented in this edition!  Presentation topics will include: safety-related embedded software programmable logic controllers (PLCs) approaches to determining safety performance levels electromagnetic interference (EMI) immunity test methods Register for this presentation at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYucOuorTMjGtczUhblCBzdvodahaN_u-MS Find out if your product evaluations should continue to use ISO 13849-1:2015 and IEC 62061:2021 instead of the new standard! Speaker: Doug Nix co-owns Compliance InSight Consulting, Inc., and writes the Machinery Safety 101 blog. His experience since 1985 includes control system design, testing, certification and consulting for electrical equipment and automation systems. He specializes in risk assessment and machinery safety. Nix is a 30-year member of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) and a Senior Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He serves on 11 CSA, IEC and ISO Technical Committees related to his work and to Standards development. First PSES Joint Chapter Meeting!

Our PSES Chapter recently achieved Joint Chapter Status, and we are very happy to welcome everyone in all 3 Bay Area Sections (SCV / SF / OEB) to our FIRST Joint Chapter online meeting on Wednesday, May 10, at 5:00 pm PDT. Others interested, both Members and non-Members, are also welcome! Zoom meeting information is below. Two main agenda items: (1)  Accepting nominations in 2023 for our Chapter Vice-Chair, Secretary and Webmaster positions.  Yes, you can even nominate yourself! If you cannot attend the online meeting please send your nominations to our Chapter Chair, John McBain, at [email protected]. If you first would like to discuss roles & responsibilities, just let John know! Chapter officer positions typically are held only for two years to let other members have the opportunity to participate. It’s a rewarding activity – both professionally (new contacts and technical information) and socially (we have fun!).  Responsibilities are shared among the officers, so the time commitment is minimal. One of the best results of becoming an officer is meeting and developing lasting relationships with other product safety professionals – especially difficult in these days of continuing organizational “long COVID”. (2)  Planning for our 2023-24 Chapter activities - primarily arranging Technical Meetings and finding a home for in-person meetings. Your ideas for presentations are always welcome, so bring that topic you always wanted to hear about and we will find a speaker.  If you would like to do a presentation yourself, that’s great! We had a great year in 2022 and we are looking forward to 2023 and 2024. Our Chapter online Technical Presentations in 2022 (with links): Nov 9     Mexico Market Access and Changes in 2022, by Maja Bland & Nadia Farhan Oct 12   Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), by Bhanu Sharma, PhD Sep 14  Why Functional Safety?, by Jason Mauldin May 11  The Basics of Laser Safety in the Workplace, by Regan Arndt Apr 13   Changes to the FCC Rules for RF Exposure!, by Vina Kerai Mar 9     OTA Software updates – the big picture, by Florian Rohde Feb 9     Safety Datasheets and Chemical Regulations, by Shalini Saini Ram Jan 12   Bonding and Grounding, by Richard Nute Here is the Zoom meeting information: When: May 10, 2023 05:00 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada) Register in advance for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIqdeigrT4vHtfiIW8xjF-akWbbJouma5cQ After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Working together through our IEEE Society we can enhance our professional experiences and careers – and enjoy doing it, too! We hope to see you at the May 10 meeting, but even if you are not able to attend, please send in your nomination.  Thank you!
