From Hangar Deck to AI Lab: How the USS Hornet Built Its Own Private LLM

Join Us on July 14 6PM-7:30PM | IEEE SCV-OEB SSIT Chapter Meeting

Co-Sponsored by the OEB/SCV SSIT, SCV WIE and the SCV AESS chapters.

The USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum built a private large language model event using Google’s NotebookLM and 165 curated content sources.

Speakers Mark Rowell, CIO of the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum, and Chuck Myers, Docent and Board Member, will discuss the project’s design, content curation, testing, real-world use cases, and implications for museums, education, and historical preservation.

The program will include live demos, a deep dive into Apollo 11 and 12 mission content, and fresh material being loaded in real time. IEEE members and guests are welcome at 6PM Tuesday night at both the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda and the Plug and Play Tech Center in Sunnyvale.

Message from the Chair – 2026

Welcome to the Santa Clara Valley/Oakland East Bay SSIT Chapter!
As we enter 2026, our chapter is embarking on an exciting period of renewal. The social implications of technology have never been more urgent—from AI governance and algorithmic accountability to the future of work and digital equity. Our chapter brings together IEEE members across the Bay Area to explore these critical issues through the lens of both technical expertise and societal impact.
We were energized by the strong turnout and thoughtful discussion at our April 7th meeting on the future of work. The caliber of dialogue reminded us why SSIT’s mission matters: engineers and technologists have both the opportunity and responsibility to shape how innovation affects society.
Please join us for upcoming meetings in July and September as we continue exploring the intersection of technology and society.
As we rebuild and expand our chapter activities in 2026-27, we’re actively seeking volunteers to help shape our direction. Whether you’re interested in program planning, speaker outreach, or contributing your expertise to discussions, there’s a role for you. Leadership and committee positions are available, and we welcome members at all career stages.
Interested in getting involved? Please reach out. Together, we can ensure technology serves humanity’s best interests.
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings.
Maureen Vavra
Chair, Santa Clara Valley/Oakland East Bay SSIT Chapter
