Summary:
Optimizing energy management within a microgrid brings a set of challenges towards balancing the generation, storage, and consumption of electricity in real-time while ensuring grid stability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. This pushes the microgrids to support the grid integrations which could be in the form of ancillary services or renewable energy resources. As the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road continues to grow, there is a growing need for reliable and efficient charging infrastructure to support the increased demand for electricity. Microgrids can target this infrastructure to provide a 1) localized and flexible power source for EV charging stations while 2) reducing the strain on the main power grid, 3) improving the overall efficiency of the charging process, and 4) utilizing it towards fulfilling the power intermittency in the local substations. This talk focuses on addressing vehicle-grid integration where the battery packs in EVs can be utilized to participate in ancillary services such as demand response programs. It also addresses the complicated structure of these batteries which have arrays of cells equipped with numerous parametric indicators like power capacity, voltage, current, temperature, etc. As a result, the battery pack of an EV is a very sensitive entity as small variations can affect their complicated hierarchy. This pushes us to the direction where an efficient battery management system is required to protect these battery packs from these issues while providing diagnostic and prognostic functions at the component level and at the system level. This would eventually ensure smooth vehicle-to-grid integration and use of EVs as storage units.
Bio: Haris M. Khalid (SMIEEE, FHEA) received the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree from University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan, in 2007, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, in 2009 and 2012, respectively, all in Mechatronics and Control Systems Engineering.
He is currently an Assistant Professor with the College of Engineering and Information Technology, University of Dubai (UD), Academic City, Dubai, UAE, since 2023. He is also a Visiting Senior Researcher with University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa since 2022. From 2019β2022, he was an Energy Specialist Consultant to UAE Space Agency (UAESA) and Nano-Racks for βTests in Orbitsβ themed projects to Space. From 2016β2022, he was an Assistant Professor with the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) β Sharjah Campuses. He has also worked as a postdoctoral researcher and visiting scholar with Masdar Institute and Petroleum Institute from 2013β2016 and 2015β2016 respectively.
He has authored/co-authored 95+ peer-reviewed research publications, and two textbooks. He has an author-level metric (h-index) of 30. He has won research grants of 1.7+ million USD towards research, development, and start-up ventures. His research interests include power systems, cyber-attacks, renewable energy integration, energy storage systems, electric vehicles, transportation electrification, signal processing, machine learning and AI, IoT, and fault diagnostics.
