The IEEE Utah section has held this event annually for over five years with good attendance.  The prior chair of this event is moving on and we are looking for volunteers to keep it going.  We are looking for volunteers for the following positions:

Chair

The chair is in charge of making the event a success.  The ideal chair has experience with Boy Scouts and the requirements for teaching and signing off merit badges.  The prior chair is available to provide guidance for site selection and to help with recruiting merit badge counselors.  Weber State and Salt Lake Community College have volunteered their facilities in the past for this event.

Some of the things that need to be done to make this happen are:

  • Secure a facility and dates.  Normally the event takes place over two Saturdays, one or two weeks apart.  This needs to be done three months in advance or more.
  • Secure counselors for the merit badges.  What merit badges we offer are determined by counselors willing to teach them, so counselors need to be secured before the signup goes live.
  • Help counselors get registered with the Boy Scouts, if needed, and receive necessary training (YPT and merit badge counselor training, both online).
  • Setup registration system.  vTools or Evite were previously used.  This is left up to the discretion of the chair.
  • Advertise with IEEE and the Boy Scouts
  • See that the event goes smoothly

Volunteer

This person is there to help the chair with any tasks required to make the event a success.  This may be helping make sure instructors are registered with the boy scouts, setting up registration, handling questions during the event, etc.  This event is a lot for one person to run so every bit of help is appreciated.  Counselor

If you are a merit badge counselor for one of the many STEM related merit badges, or would like to be, you are invited to join us.  The format of the merit badge pow-wow is 90 minute classes over two weekends.  It is desired that they scouts are able to complete the merit badge by the end of the second class if they have done the in-class work and any homework.  If a merit badge requires significant homework, you should let the chair know so that this is noted on the signup page.  If you are able to only teach on one of the dates, please still volunteer.  The chair may be able to find someone else that can teach the second week.

Merit badges we have taught in the past include:

  • Electricity
  • Digital Technology
  • Electronics
  • Energy
  • Engineering
  • Geocaching
  • Inventing
