2/22 Girl Scout Days: Engineering: It’s a Girl Thing, Jr
Meeting was successfully updated.
https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/meeting/edit/23141
We have our first event of 2014, a table at University of Utah SWE’s annual Girl Scout Night called “Engineering: it’s a Girl Thing, Jr” event, Feb 21st from 4:30pm-9pm at the University of Utah.
It coincides with “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day”. The theme is engineering revolving around food. For example, chemical engineering is demonstrating liquid nitrogen ice cream and “production engineering” is doing a pudding production line. Keeping with the theme of sugary indulgence, we are currently planning on demonstrating the function of microwave ovens through a presentation of microwave energy and how it transforms marshmallows (ever done a microwave Peep fight?).0
Additional ideas are powering an LED using lemons, i.e. electrochemistry. I could use help in presentation for microwave energy if someone would like to come up with some slides/animations for electromagnetic energy and/or cavity resonances. I will provide a laptop and monitor for viewing slides. Also, anyone want to own the electrochemistry portion? Create a demo of powering an LED using lemons?

IEEE Utah Section is looking for volunteers to participate in the EYH outreach program, if you know interested parties in attending as a youth or adult, please see contacts on their website.
About the conference
Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a conference for girls 6th through 10th grade. This day-long event will include hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). At the conference, girls will get a chance to meet STEM role models and learn more about careers in those fields. Our ultimate goal is to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st Century challenges.
