The Director Coach: An approach to filling the younger CEO “training gap” (slides)

One of the most demanding jobs in industrial organizations is that of the CEO, where the “buck stops.” Although the responsibilities of the job have not changed significantly over the years, the age range of the individuals placed in the job has decreased. There is now much less time to learn and be trained as a CEO before they step into the CEO role – this has led to a “training gap.” With the rapidly increasing rate of new technology that is being created, in many cases a single individual has most of the elements of the business in their head and becomes the natural selection as the CEO. Often this technologist is one of those that has had little training in this management role. This has led to a need for a coach who becomes a very important player during the learning process that is critical to closing this new gap. This is especially true for startup and smaller company CEOs. Our speaker Ron Schilling has developed a method for such coaching called “The Director Coach” that he has developed over many years teaching management courses at Stanford University. Topics covered include:

• What is a Director Coach?
• What are the responsibilities and requirements for the CEO and Director Coach?
• How to match a CEO with a Director Coach?
• What are the tools for effective communications between the key players?
• What are the financial considerations of the roles?

SPEAKER:
Ron Schilling,  Executive Chairman, EchoPixel, has worked in R&D, marketing, business development, strategic planning, general management, and as a CEO board member (director coach). He has been on teams successfully bringing microprocessors, CT, MRI, healthcare IT and most recently Interactive Virtual Reality to the global marketplace. Schilling’s current focus is venture activity and director coaching. He received a PhD/EE from Polytechnic Institute of NY, an MS/EE from Princeton and a B/EE from CCNY.  Ron has been teaching “Tools for Strategic Management” and “High Performance Management,” at Stanford Continuing Studies, since 2001.
