Management Forum: Expressions of Excellence! (link to slides below)
Presented by Craig Harrison
In a world in which quality is often an afterthought, Where ‘quick & dirty’ is becoming the norm, where overworked employees and bottom line sensibilities have led to reduced quality, pedestrian results, and a “so what” attitude, there is nothing more inspiring than An Expression of Excellence!
Whether it’s a great architectural feat, a virtuoso performance or a mini masterpiece on a canvas, a platter or circuit board, excellence is inspiring, wherever we find it.
Examples of leadership excellence that make a difference in the quality of corporate life are established. We are reminded of the difference that we can make when we apply our energy, creativity and attention to be and do our personal best.
These expressions come in all forms: from monumental projects to random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty. Each instance of excellence enhances life for others and inspires us in its magnificence.
In the Presentation, stories that are examples and samples of excellence are provided. We look at excellence across professions and identify its hallmarks. Participants are asked to share a future vision of excellence in their workplace, and then discuss how they could make this happen there. They leave knowing more about creating excellence in their actions and activities, with a renewed desire to create this for themselves at work.
Our Presenter Craig Harrison, (see www.craigspeaks.com ) has successfully pursued excellence in corporate, high-tech, non- profit and sports environments for the last twenty years.
Craig developed his customer service orientation with the Sunnyvale consulting firm Digital Finesse, and later as a curriculum developer with ASK/Ingres (now Computer Associates). As a manager with IDG Books (now Hungry Minds), Craig led a group that published over 50 high-tech books a year.
As a leader Craig chaired the board of directors of KKUP radio station, oversaw, 115 speaking clubs as a district governor for Toastmasters International, and led a high school basketball team to Australia for the non-profit Sports for Understanding. He is also a past board member of the National Speakers Association for Northern California and Mt. Diablo’s American Society for Training and Development. Craig holds a BA degree from the University of California at Santa Cruz in Sociology.

After-dinner Talk: Three Trends That Will Shape the Future of Silicon Valley
Presented by Kevin Wheeler, President of Global Learning Resources, Inc.
Silicon Valley led the technology revolution that transformed the world, and has enjoyed 30 years of prosperity, innovation and growth as a result. It will continue to lead such revolutions. A unique confluence of brains, money, and a fresh view of the world were the critical ingredients in the past, but a different set of ingredients will forge the future. Some of them we can already see and others are just emerging. In a dynamic presentation, direct from the Institute for the Future, in Menlo Park, Kevin Wheeler will discuss three new dimensions that will shape our future here in Silicon Valley, and the impacts they will have on our business and personal lives.

The focus of this talk is how to develop a flexible leadership style to enable you to be successful with engineers of differing skill/experience levels.
Michael Selby is a Management and Organizational Development Consultant with 20 years experience in Bay Area hi-techs. After-dinner Talk: Staying Nimble in Any Economy – Managing at Brocade
Presented by Dave de Simone, Brocade VP of Platform Engineering
From fast growth to industry-wide slowdown, from hiring in a high flying economy to employee retention in a tech slump, Brocade has successfully weathered it all and is poised to take advantage of the economic upturn when it arrives. Meeting schedules and managing resources for concurrent projects will always be challenges for project and functional managers. But solutions are more easily reached with management support, with processes that enable rather than obstruct, and with a corporate culture than encourages leadership, accountability and risk taking.
Dave de Simone, Vice President of Platform Engineering at Brocade, will share his insights on these topics, which he as culled from a lifetime of engineering management. In 2000, he brought to Brocade more than 20 years of experience in managing hardware and software development, testing and program management for systems and data communications products.
De Simone spent 11 years as vice president, Engineering at Compaq Computer Corporation’s Tandem division. While at Compaq, de Simone managed the company’s clustering technology and software services division, which included the ServerNet product line and InfiniBand hardware and software development efforts. In that role, de Simone was a key member in Compaq’s participation in the InfiniBand Trade Association, an organization dedicated to developing a new common I/O specification to deliver a channel-based, switched fabric technology to the networking industry. de Simone managed a variety of functions, including: software development, software release and configuration management, program management, hardware development, CAD tools, and ASIC technology development.
Prior to Compaq, Dave held engineering and operations management positions at Polycom, MIPS Computer Systems, Apple Computer, and Amdahl. He holds a BSEE degree from the University of California, Davis.

Management Forum: How Much Are Your Habits Costing You?
Presented by Jean O’Neill, Trainer, Productive Learning and Leisure
Our minds are constantly in action. They direct us to perform certain tasks and react in certain ways that are often habitual. Joins us for a dynamic, stimulating event and discover how these habits may be getting in the way of you responding to certain situations in the most optimal ways. Be ready to participate in experiential exercises that demonstrate how your habits limit you and why. You’ll walk away with:
• An understanding of how your habits limit your choices
• A clearer picture of the specific areas where this comes into play for you.
• Tools you can use to break out of these limitations.
• An experience of how much we do out of habit and that breaking habits takes awareness.
• Knowledge of what it takes to make better choices and thereby improve the quality of your life.
• Applications of the experience to (your profession)
In 1987 Jean discovered her love of personal development and began taking seminars in the areas of communication, personal presentation, business, productivity and relationships. As a person clearly focused on helping others, Jean was drawn to the founders of Productive Learning and Leisure and the work she saw them doing with individuals as well as companies. After-dinner Talk: The Changing Environment for Startup Investments
Presented by Eghosa Omoigui, Senior Attorney, Treasury/Portfolio Management/Subsidiaries, Intel Capital
Our Engineering Management Society chapter traditionally sponsors an entrepreneurial presentation the first meeting after summer. This year continues the tradition, with a venture capital guru from Intel’s acquisitions arm, Mr. Eghosa Omoigui. He has agreed to speak on “The Changing Environment for Startup Investments” in the new “post-dot.com” era (if that is indeed the case come September 26th). The presentation will address whatever the new market realities are for startups seeking funding in different technology areas. And with the downturn last year, it turns out that not all technology areas have been uniformly affected in the last 12 months. Come learn about the prospects for new technology and opportunities for engineering from the perspective of the business world in the upcoming year at what will be an insightful meeting.
Mr. Eghosa Omoigui, our after dinner speaker for the September 26th meeting, is Senior Attorney of Treasury/Portfolio Management/Subsidiaries at Intel Capital. He is responsible for forming strategic investment opportunities for Intel. As such, he is the main interface between startups seeking funding from Intel’s investment arm and the business units within Intel who would use that technology. Intel usually invests in startups as an investment partner alongside the venture capitalists (VCs), so Mr. Omoigui has a good VC perspective.
