Are you interested in sharing your talents by volunteering with IEEE Phoenix Section?
Phoenix Section is looking for volunteers with the necessary leadership and organizational skills to impact the future success of the organization.
Here are examples of some open positions that could use your help:
- Calling non-renewing members about why they didn’t renew and if they want to renew, tell them how.
- STEM and K-12 activities
- Humanitarian activities
- Mentoring IEEE student members
- Help with Senior Member Elevations
- Organizing activities of Phoenix Section branches of Society, Chapter, affinity groups or standing committees.


Volunteer Job Descriptions
Executive Committee:
Section Chair: Leads the section. It is a 2-year term.
Past Chair: Outgoing Section chair. Supports current Section Chair in an advisory role. It is a 2-year term.
Vice Chair: Supports Section Chair in key activities. Maintains calendar of events. Another main role is to get trained in Section Chair role. It is a 2-year term.
Treasurer: (See additional information)
Responsible for conducting financial transactions for the Section. Responsible for Audits, Annual Reporting, contracts, accounts and budgets, and other financial matters.
Another main role is to get trained in the Section Vice Chair role. It is a 2-year term.
Secretary: (See additional information)
Entry-level position for Section’s Executive Committee. Maintains historical records and writes/ keeps meeting minutes. Responsibility for regulatory and IEEE bylaws compliance. Another main role is to get trained for the Treasurer’s role.
Standing Committees:
- Awards – Managing annual awards banquet. Identifying and nominating Section members for various IEEE and other awards
- Communications aka Publicity – Responsible for publicizing the activities of the Section that enhances the image of the Section. Is the public face of the Section (along with the Executive Committee). Develops communication and publicity strategies. Publishes the monthly newsletter and maintains the contents of the Web and other social media platforms of the Section.
- Conferences – (See additional information) Represents the Section to other IEEE entities as an excellent host location for conferences.
- Intersociety – Coordination among various societies
- Membership Development – Coordinates recruiting and maintaining of members and elevation to Senior positions in IEEE.
- PACE – (See additional information) The Professional Activities Chair, (PACE Chair) promotes, organizes and conducts professional activities that enhance the status of technical professionals and their success.
- Student Activities Coordinator – is the liaison to all Phoenix Section student branches. Ensures the vitality of these branches and represents their needs in the Phoenix Section.
- Web Master – Responsible for maintaining/designing/upgrading the contents of the website and social media platforms.

Volunteer Training
- The Center for Leadership Excellence. This has training modules for many positions in sections and chapters. It also includes presentations given at Sections Congress 2017.
- IEEE Collabratec has a community for membership development. There is also a workspace for those who are interested in OU Analytics.
- Presentations from the different area meetings are often available on the area websites.
- Region or society officers. Check to see if the region (for sections) or society (for chapters) has an officer with the same position as you have. If so, engage them to see what resources they can share with you. The region also has a training chair to help volunteers find the information relevant to their positions.
- meetings.vTools.ieee.org. Using the search features of this site you can see past activities your section or chapter held. You can also see what activities nearby sections or chapters are holding. This information can help you understand how to meet the needs of your members.
