Human Systems Engineering Education, Educational Technology, and Writing

November 1, 2018 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Co-sponsored by: Martin Reisslein

Human Systems Engineering (HSE) is a relatively new program at ASU that now supports
degrees at the undergraduate (BS) and graduate (MS and PhD) levels. The mission of HSE is
to apply and infuse principles of psychological science in the pursuit of engineering and design.
Thus, HSE researchers and practitioners focus on engineering problems and solutions
pertaining to human needs, goals, capabilities, and limitations. As educators, we aim to teach
future engineers about these human factors and the value of respecting them throughout the
engineering process. In this talk, I will discuss ongoing research to understand the role of HSE
in engineering education, including students’ current knowledge and approaches, as well as
ways to ‘nudge’ students along a more human-centered path. I will also discuss ways that I’ve
incorporated an HSE mindset into my work in automated writing evaluation (AWE) and
intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) for writing. To conclude, I will ‘shift gears’ to discuss graduate
level writing and evidence-based ways to develop writing proficiency.
