The Darknet, the Dark Web, … and Deeper

August 9, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The IEEE Computer Society has invited our own Dr. Bill Curd to present on “The Darknet, the Dark Web, … and Deeper” at their August 9th meeting in DeVry University at 2149 W Dunlap Avenue, Phoenix (about ½ mile east of I-17 on Dunlap) and time-permitting, to also talk briefly about several prominent cyber security certifications, what they are, and how salary correlates with holding them.

We’re familiar with the Surface Web but what are the Darknet, the Dark Web, the Undernet, the Invisible Web, the Hidden Web? What are they, where do they fit in the big picture, how can they be accessed, … and what is deeper?

After some quick disclaimers due to the nature of the topic, Bill will start with an overview of the Internet, how search engines work, some protections, and how tor works. Then, he will explore prominent Dark Web (.onion) marketplaces, where literally anything may be bought and sold — how to access, search, and navigate there – but you will be warned against doing more than looking.

Then you will see some snippets of diving much deeper!

Light refreshments (usually free pizza, cookies and drinks) and networking start at 6:00 PM, followed by the presentation at 7:00 PM.
