Harnessing the Full RF Bandwidth for 5G
Paul Hart
General Manager, Radio Power Solutions
NXP Semiconductors
Chandler, Arizona
Abstract
5G is the fifth-generation wireless technology for digital cellular networks that began wide deployment in 2019. A full nationwide 5G deployment in South Korea has been completed using the 3.5GHz band in a 32 transmitters per box, or 32T configuration. And in 2020, deployments are extending globally with the biggest happening in China and United States with systems that may comprise of 16T, 32T, and 64T depending on use case. These solutions enable massive multiple inputs and multiple outputs, aka mMIMO.
The frequency spectrum of 5G is divided into low-band, mid-band and millimeter waves. Low-band uses a frequency range similar to its predecessor 4G, also called 5G lite (typically less than 1 GHz). 5G mid-band is the most widely deployed, now in over 20 networks, with frequencies ranging from 2.4 to 4.2 GHz. The third band (mm wave) is the fastest with frequencies between 24 to 72 GHz. Lower frequency has wide covereage area, good building penetration, but low peak data speed. Conversely higher frequency range has low covereage area, poor building penetration, but high data rates. This wide range of frequencies and power level requirements demand a wide variety of solutions in a small form factor.
This talk will describe the challenges that carriers face in building out their network infrastructure and also describe the challenges that the device and component manufactures are facing in the 5G deployment including the power/cost challenges of delivering very wide bandwidth high data rate 5G signals.
Speaker Biography
Paul Hart is the general manager of the Radio Power Solutions business line at NXP Semiconductors. In this role, he is responsible for maximizing NXP’s leadership position in 5G and identifying new market opportunities to drive growth with best-in-class technologies, product offerings and system solutions spanning the entire range of 5G frequencies and power.
Paul joined Motorola Semiconductor as an RF engineer in 2001, transferring to Freescale in 2006 and NXP in 2015. He has 19+ years of semiconductor industry experience specializing in the development, launch and life cycle management of cutting-edge RF solutions. Prior to his current role, Paul managed the Radio Frequency business at NXP. Before that, he led NXP’s RF applications engineering teams and the engineering efforts that sharpened the company’s focus on next-generation power amplifier (PA) architectures, radio algorithms and radio system integration, and RF PA customer reference designs. He also has been responsible for the development and new product introduction of the Digital Front-End product family.
Paul earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona and a Master of Science degree in Microwaves and Optoelectronics from University College London.
