“I joined IEEE and became a volunteer as soon as I entered USC Engineering School and started working at JPL as an intern. My mother advised me as a child on the importance of networking and helping others. As a YP I was confronted with a challenging project where neither the existing technology nor the cost were acceptable. A contact that I had made at IEEE meetings pointed out to me that one of his committee members in Atlanta was working to solve the type of problem I was encountering. This resulted in solving the problem and reducing the cost to 5% of the original estimate which was $1,000,000.” –Eremita Miranda
“My involvement with Metro Los Angeles Section has exposed me to networking opportunities and resources that have benefited my transition from graduate to Young Professional to Mid-Career Professional. The conferences and cross- section opportunities have greatly exceeded my expectation, and available free- time, which makes IEEE my preferred professional society. The additional software tools, such as vTools Events, have enabled me to search and be involved with IEEE while traveling regionally and nationwide… as far as Puerto Rico for Hurricane Maria in 2017. In addition, my networking gets supplements by online learning through free webinars and ComSoc Trainings. Few technical societies have so many options for being involved whatever level of career advancement.” – Greg Valdivia
“As a college student, IEEE has been my primary source of networking and connecting with professional for years. Indeed, I first joined IEEE during my master in Saudi Arabia to take advantage of the conference discounts. Shortly after moving to the United States, I met with a group of IEEE enthusiasts that introduced me to all the opportunities that IEEE offers, and I had the chance to volunteer in my local IEEE Metropolitan Los Angeles section under the supervision of Eremita Miranda. Since I started being involved with IEEE, I had met multiple professionals and helped organizing several events which further boosted my networking skills. To sum up, IEEE has been a valuable source to stay in touch with other engineers and to build my professional networks.” –Ahmed Douik
“I started my IEEE journey 20 years ago while attending Cal State University of Los Angeles and working as an intern at Southern California Edison. I was aware of IEEE but never participated in college until I met Eremita Miranda a Senior Engineer at SCE encouraged me to participate in the IEEE Metro LA Section. She emphasized to me the importance of joining a technical professional association and how IEEE has helped her in her technical career. I really didn’t know where it would take me. I knew that joining would help me demonstrate my devotion to the profession and help build out my resume for that all important first job. I have volunteered in all the leadership roles within the Metropolitan Los Angeles Section (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary). Being involved in these leadership roles has boosted my confidence and has tremendously improved.my networking and soft skills. Our soft skills are very important for us to move up the ladder; to I have held several positions at SCE during my 18 years of service there. before I ventured out to Cordoba Corporation as a Project Manager. Being part of IEEE has played a big role in my success of obtaining various roles within my engineering career by networking.” –Yvonne Marchand
“I started attending IEEE Meetings when I was 15. I went with my father, a member and volunteer in the Planning Committee. He always encouraged me to go to the IEEE meetings with him. I was hesitant to go at first; however, when I finally got there, I met the most outstanding, kind-hearted engineers. These engineers are those who keep the IEEE going- members of the various thirty-nine IEEE societies. I was 8 years old when I became interested in working on computers. I was practically glued on- there was nothing else I wanted to do in my life. I would play games, use Microsoft Paint to make art- I would do it all. This served me very well when I was invited to attend the website design tutorials organized by Eremita Miranda, conducted by Ed Perkins, Region 6 Webmaster and Khanh Luu, Sr. Information Management Analyst at the IEEE Headquarters in New Jersey. I was asked to create a website for the EMBS (Engineering in Medicine) and the Communications chapters. The skills that I learned in my participation in IEEE will be invaluable to me as I am starting as a freshman at California State University, San Luis Obispo in Fall 2020. At the request of Eremita Miranda, I am including my picture receiving the IEEE Award from Ms. Malak Shirkhani, Section Chair below, for the outstanding contribution of creating the two websites.” -Leandro Wong
