IEEE PES Webinar: Phasor Domain Short Circuit Analysis of Transmission Systems in Presence of Inverter Based Resources (IBRs)
Presented by: Dr. Sukumar Brahma, Clemson University This webinar: Phasor domain short circuit analysis (PDSCA) is performed to calculate fault currents, which in turn helps choose equipment rating and relay settings. Traditionally, power system is considered to be a linear system for this analysis, as generators that are operated in a non-linear fashion (PV sources) during normal operation behave as Thevenin sources (linear) during fault. Due to inherently nonlinear response to fault of inverters that interconnect renewables, this underlying assumption of linearity breaks down and a new analytical framework is required. Also, as the fault currents contributed by inverters are comparable to load currents, inclusion of loads (which are nonlinear) into short circuit analysis is required for accurate results. This webinar will show how phasor domain short circuit analysis can be accurately performed in presence of any penetration level of IBRs. Presenter bio: Dr. Brahma is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE PES. He has been elected IEEE Fellow “for contributions to power system protection with distributed and renewable generation”. He chaired the Working Group C24 within PSRC that performed foundational work on the topic under discussion in this webinar, which is captured in PES TR-78 (https://resourcecenter.ieee-pes.org/publications/technical-reports/pes_tp_tr78_psrc_fault_062320)

2025 IEEE PES IAS PowerAfrica
The IEEE PES/IAS PowerAfrica Conference is a premier event that brings together research scientists, engineers, and practitioners from across the globe to discuss the latest research findings, innovative ideas, and emerging technologies in the power systems sector. This conference is dedicated to addressing the unique challenges and opportunities present on the African continent, focusing on power systems integration, business models, technological advances, policies, and regulatory frameworks.

IEEE PES Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)
In 2025 AUPEC will be held from 29 September-1 October 2025 in Brisbane, Australia. The conference invites researchers and industry professionals to submit new and original ideas on different aspects of power and energy engineering, which includes but is not limited to the following broad topics:

2025 IEEE PES Switchgear Committee Meeting
5 – 9 October 2025 | Reno, Nevada The scope of the Committee describes the technical responsibilities of the Main Committee and of its Subcommittees. Subcommittees, in addition to their technical responsibilities, have direct responsibility for remaining cognizant of social implications, the environment, esthetics, increased employment, and other matters as related to the practice of electrical engineering.

2025 IEEE PES Transformers Committee Meeting
19 – 23 October 2025 | Bonita Springs, FL The Transformers Committee is one of the largest and most active of the 17 technical committees within the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES). The Committee is comprised of technical and managerial representatives from manufacturers, consultants, vendors and end users of electrical transformers and components. The continuing scope of the Committee is to develop and update standards and guidelines for the design, testing, repair, installation, operation and maintenance of transformers, reactors and associated components that are used within electric utility and industrial power systems.
