IEEE Power & Energy Society Live Online Learning Topic: A Machine Learning Framework for Stability Analysis of the Future Power Grids Presented by: Dr. Jin Tan, National Renewable Energy Laboratory This webinar: With increasing penetrations of PV generation (including other distributed energy resources), future distribution systems, which will be governed by faster dynamics and complex dispatch mechanisms, requiring novel estimation and control of distribution-located assets. Open Energy Data Initiative – System Integration (OEDI-SI) is currently developing key software tools, datasets novel distribution state estimation, control optimization, and transient event analyses. This initiative will enable users to have access to open-source data and algorithms along with ability to incorporate user-specific data to perform distribution-level analyses. More specifically, the focus of the effort is on developing distribution system state estimation (DSSE), distribution optimal power flow (D-OPF), and transient event analysis. In this tutorial we will provide an overview and hands-on training on utilizing the tools developed in OEDI-SI by multiple National Labs and DOE. Presenter bio: Dr. Jin Tan is a principal engineer and a distinguished member of the research staff in the Grid Automation and Controls Group within the Power Systems Engineering Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). She leads development of the Multi-Timescale Integrated Dynamic and Scheduling (MIDAS) framework to address the challenges of planning and operating extremely high renewable penetrated grid. She is also developing advanced electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation capability for power grids with large numbers of distributed energy resources to study the stability of 100% renewables. |

Topic: Solar Design and Installation Training – 101 Tutorial Presented by: Shuhui Li, Associate Professor, University of Alabama This Web-based Tutorial: Aims to provide fundamental knowledge and guideline on how to conduct solar photovoltaic system design and installation process. This tutorial starts with a brief introduction to electric power systems as well as the clean development of modern electric power systems. Then, the webinar turns to one of the fastest-growing clean energy sectors – Solar Photovoltaic (PV). The webinar aims to provide an easy understanding way, with minimum theoretical involvement, to establish with quick understanding and skills on how to design and install a solar PV system. The topics include solar panels, solar inverters, batteries for solar PV systems, racking of solar panels, PV system design guidelines, PV system installation guide, and testing and troubleshooting. A significant number of practical figures, drawings, videos, and presentation animations will be utilized in the webinar series to build fundamental skills that would speed up trainees to get into the solar industry. Presenter Bio: Dr. Shuhui Li received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, China, in 1983 and 1988, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX, USA. He is a recipient of the IEEE Standards Association’s Emerging Technology Award for his contribution to IEEE Std. 2800-2022. He is the chair of the Pre_university Committee and Renewable Technologies Subcommittee with IEEE Power & Energy Society. His current research interests include renewable energy systems, power electronics, power systems, electric machines and drives, and applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in power and energy systems. Dr. Li is a senior member of IEEE and the National Academy of Inventors. |

Topic: Power System Advancements Now Require Electromagnetic Transients Programs – the Need for and Development of PSCAD Presented by: Dennis Woodford, IEEE Life Fellow This webinar: With the commercial operation of high voltage DC transmission (HVDC) systems starting up in the late 1960’s, studying their impact in the power systems they were imbedded in was a major challenge. The digital load flow and transients’ stability programs were only being developed when computers were powerful enough to run them. This being in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. During this same period, HVDC had to be properly assessed on component based transient network analyzers (TNA). This was a laborious process setting up an HVDC system on a TNA and where a duplicate set of actual controls and protections in actual hardware were essential. Presenter bio: Dennis Woodford graduated from Melbourne University in 1967, and with a Master’s from the University of Manitoba in 1973. From 1967 until 1970, he worked with English Electric (now GE) and spent some time at Stafford in the U.K. working on Bipole I of the Nelson River HVDC project. In 1973 he joined Manitoba Hydro and became Special Studies Engineer in Transmission Planning where he worked on the Winnipeg –Twin Cities 500 kV interconnection and the Nelson River HVDC projects, Bipoles I and II. He is a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and elected an international member of the National Academy of Engineering (US). He was awarded the Uno Lamm Award by IEEE PES for his contributions to HVDC transmission. |
