IEEE-EMBS Virtual Workshop: Innovations in Extracorporeal Gas Exchange Therapies Recent Advances and Outstanding Challenges
IEEE-EMBS Virtual Workshop: Innovations in Extracorporeal Gas Exchange Therapies Recent Advances and Outstanding Challenges
The COVID-19 outbreak has fostered transformative engineering and medical research activities to innovate extracorporeal respiratory therapies on many fronts. These novel technologies have the potential to supplement existing respiratory treatments as well as to evolve into stand-alone preventative therapy strategies. Remarkable progress has been made to date, but at the same time, significant challenges have also been reported. The goal of this workshop is to share recent advances and outstanding challenges pertaining to a broad range of extracorporeal therapies with a main focus on oxygenation and carbon dioxide removal, so that novel ideas to address various extracorporeal therapy problems can be fostered through an idea convergence-divergence process by learning from successes achieved in diverse challenges under the umbrella of extracorporeal therapies. The speakers/panelists are top academic researchers in the field. The workshop will consist of 4 presentations by the speakers with Q&A from live audience, followed by an open panel discussion between the speakers and live audience. By bringing together leading experts, the workshop may help accelerate further progress and collaborations in the field.

IEEE EMBS-NUS iHealthtech Forum DataScience and Engineering in Healthcare, Medicine and Biology
Data science is an emerging discipline that will be instrumental in accelerating healthcare innovation and transforming the healthcare industry to improve the quality and cost of services provided to patients. Datascience, broadly defined, includes the tools, techniques and theoretical underpinnings for enabling machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to be applied to large, diverse, complex, longitudinal, and distributed datasets in order to extract useful information and knowledge. Machine learning and AI have already led to significant successes in many health-related fields including medical image classification, segmentation, prediction and decision making. The field of data science promises to accelerate the applications and successes, specifically by enabling the scaling to “big” and heterogenous data.
