| The IEEE Hawaii Power & Energy Society (PES) Chapter, Electron Device Society (EDS)/Solid State Circuits Society (SSCS) Joint Chapter, the Communications Society (ComSoc)/Signal Processing Society (SPS)/Computer Society Joint Chapter, Life Members Affinity Group, and Young Professionals (YP) Affinity Group are holding elections this year for the 2025-2026 term. If you are interested in running for an officer position in PES or EDS/SSCS, please email John Borland (johnoborland@aol.com). If you are interested in running for an officer position in the ComSoc/SPS/CS Joint Chapter, Life Members or Young Professionals, please email Brianne Tengan (brianne.tengan@ieee.org). The nomination deadline is July 31st. Elections will take place in November. |

Advancing your member grade can bring added peer recognition to your accomplishments. The grade of Senior Member is the highest for which application may be made and shall require experience reflecting professional maturity. For admission or transfer to the grade of Senior Member, a candidate shall be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive, or originator in IEEE-designated fields for a total of 10 years and have demonstrated 5 years of significant performance. 2024 IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) International Leadership Summit (ILS) |
|  | Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) will host The 2024 IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) International Leadership Summit (ILS) on August 1-2, 2024 at Discovery Hall in Richland, Washington. PNNL is one of only ten locations worldwide selected to host the prestigious event. In 2019, PNNL hosted the event, which attracted nearly 400 attendees from academia, industry, and national laboratories—it was hailed as a huge success by IEEE.
🔍 Exceptional posters highlighting cutting-edge technologies and innovative policies are encouraged to submit. The poster session offers ILS attendees the opportunity to connect and exchange insights into their research endeavors. The IEEE Richland Section will honor the most outstanding poster with the Best Poster Award.

Generator Design 101 and Alternative Fuels |
|  | IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Hawaii Chapter hosted a seminar on generators with guest speaker and local legend, Cliff Yuen, from Hawthorne CAT in the Burns & McDonnell office on May 7, 2024. This talk helped electrical engineers of all experience levels to brush up on best generator design practices and to learn about alternative fuel options that are becoming ever so common in our push towards a sustainable, yet resilient Hawaii. |

Central Area Spring Meeting & Student Competition |
|  | The IEEE Hawaii Section participated in the IEEE Region 6 Central Area Spring Meeting on May 25th hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno student branch at Incline Village Lake Tahoe campus with the IEEE Northern Nevada section. During the meeting, representatives had the opportunity to network with other volunteers and students from the Central Area and learn about successes within their Sections. |

67th Hawaii State Science & Engineering Fair |
|  | The 67th Hawaii State Science & Engineering Fair was held April 1-3, 2024 at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall and hosted by the Hawaii Academy of Science. For the past decade, IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers) Hawaii presented special awards for outstanding projects related to Electrical Engineering or Computer Science. Senior Research projects are grades 9-12 and Junior Research projects are grades 6-8. This year six IEEE Hawaii members and community members volunteered as judges and four were also Academy judges, Song Choi, Michael Hirakami, Eugene Chang, Tom Brotherton, Sophia Tang, and John Borland. The three Senior Research project award winners of $200 went 1) ROBO-234 by Andy Chen of Kalani High School for “Harnessing Brainwaves for Robot Control with an Arduino Brainwave Reader”, 2) ROBO-235 by Aaron-James Santa Cruz of Waipahu High School for “Using Computer Vision toby Analyze Traffic”, and 3) ROBO-236 by Jisue Hong of Punahou School for “Can CNNs Accurately Classify Human Emotions? A Deep-Learning Facial Expression Recognition Study”. The four Junior Research project award winners of $100 went 1) EGSD-469 by Steven Au, Alexi Terebenkov and Gordon Lai of Kaimuki Middle School for “Skyline Powered by the Breeze”, 2) EGSD-470 by Tanner Miller of Island School for “What Amount of Blades is the Most Efficient to Generate Energy with Wind Turbines?”, 3) EGSD-474 by Pierce Blanton, Ryan Doan and Wesley Mederios for “E-Car, an Efficient, Economical and Ecological Way to Generate Energy”, 4) ROBO-541 by Madilyn Corker of St. Michael School for “My Mess vs My Robot”. |
