In this talk, we review sample results based on our recent work in the areas of machine learning over networks and edge intellligence. In particular, we touch upon our work on communication-efficient federated learning and its applications. In the first part of the talk, we shed light on topics pertaining to federated learning. First, we overview a second-order federated learning algorithm, coined Fed-Sophia, with communication and computation efficiency merits. Next, we introduce our recent work on second order state synchronization (SOSS) to address the limitations of Fed-Sophia with non-IID data. Afterwards we overview MIRA which proposes a novel approach of federated multi-task learning for fine-tuning LLMs. In the second part of the talk, we shift focus to edge intelligence applications in digital health with particular focus on CVD prediction. Finally, we present our work on architecting, designing and demonstrating a system prototype for multi-tier intelligence for IoT. Speaker: Tamer ElBatt joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at The American University in Cairo (AUC) as an associate professor in July 2017. He received his BSc and MSc degrees in Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) from Cairo University, Egypt in 1993 and 1996, respectively, and his PhD degree in ECE from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA, in 2000. From 2000 to 2009, he was with HRL Labs, United States, Argon ST (now part of The Boeing Company), United States, and Lockheed Martin ATC, the United States at various positions. From 2009 to 2017, he was with the EECE Department, Cairo University, as an assistant professor and later as an associate professor (currently on leave). He held a joint appointment with Nile University, Egypt, from 2009 to 2017 and served as the director of the wireless center (WINC) from 2012 to 2017. In Fall 2019, ElBatt had been promoted to professor. His research has been supported by NTRA, ITIDA, QNRF, FP7, H2020, GM, Microsoft, Google, Vodafone Foundation, and DARPA and is currently supported by the NTRA, ITIDA, and ASRT. He has published 130 publications and holds seven issued US patents and one WIPO patent. He was a visiting professor at Politecnico di Torino, Italy, Sabanci University, Turkey and University of Padova, Italy. He is the recipient of the 2014 Egypt’s state incentive award in Engineering Sciences, the 2012 Cairo University incentive award in Engineering Sciences and the Google faculty research award in 2011. His research interests lie in the broad areas of performance analysis, design and optimization of wireless, mobile and IoT networks. Room: BE-330, Bldg: Basking Engineering Building, Baskin Engineering School of Engineering, 606 Engineering Loop, Santa Cruz, California, United States, 95064, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/574528 |

Abstract Metamaterials (MTMs) are synthetic electromagnetic materials possessing unique properties not found in natural materials. Their introduction has spurred the creation of innovative circuits with enhanced components. One notable metamaterial-based design is the composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). These antennas offer continuous frequency-dependent beam scanning from backfire to endfire with a true broadside beam. They also ensure excellent impedance matching throughout their operational range, using a straightforward feeding mechanism. The CRLH LWAs’ ability to map frequency to space means unknown target locations can simply be pinpointed by analyzing the spectral components of the returning wave. This paves the way for real-time detection, with data acquisition speeds mainly determined by the signal source’s frequency sweep rate. The sensor’s field-of-view is also expanded thanks to the wide scanning angle of CRLH LWAs. Such features enable applications like swift 2-D beamforming, expansive real-time remote sensing, vital sign monitoring, motion detection, and microwave imaging. Additionally, applying spatiotemporal modulation to CRLH LWAs can generate harmonic waves and enhance physical layer security, promoting safer wireless communication.
