December 2024 Monthly Update

By btengan
12 December, 2024

Aloha Hawaii Section Members,

As we approach the end of another year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible progress and accomplishments we've achieved together as part of the Hawaii Section. It's been a year of growth, collaboration, and new beginnings, and I am excited to share some of the highlights with you.

New Society, Geographic, and University Representation:
This year, we successfully restarted the Antennas and Propagation Chapter, providing renewed opportunities for engagement. We also formed a Joint Chapter with Oceanic Engineering, gaining local representation of the Aerospace and Electronic Systems, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, and Robotics and Automation Societies. Additionally, we submitted petitions to establish a Hawaii Pacific University Student Branch and an Island of Hawaii Subsection, expanding our reach and strengthening our connections with future engineers and communities across the islands.

Increased Collaboration Across the Region:
Our local Chapters and Affinity Groups made significant strides in collaborating with sister organizations across Region 6 (Western USA). Together, we co-hosted a variety of virtual technical talks and social events, further enhancing our connection with the broader IEEE community and providing valuable opportunities for learning and networking.

Increased Collaboration with Local Industry and Professional Engineering Societies:
We also saw meaningful partnerships with local industry and professional engineering societies this year. A notable example was the success of Kapili Maui, an initiative that brought together the local engineering community to provide support for those affected by the Maui Wildfires of 2023. This effort demonstrated the strength of our community in responding to regional challenges and working together for the greater good.

These achievements represent just a few of the exciting developments that have taken place this year. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to all of you for your participation, enthusiasm, and support. Each of you plays a vital role in the success of our Section, and I look forward to continuing our work together as we build an even stronger community in the coming year.

Mahalo,
Brianne Tengan
Hawaii Section Chair

Entrepreneurship for Engineers: Turn Your Innovation into an Impact Business

Aloha, Engineers of Hawai'i! Are you ready to transform your technical expertise into a thriving business that can make a real difference in our islands, mainland, and beyond? Introducing Entrepreneurship for Engineers—a four-part course designed to help you explore entrepreneurial opportunities, develop essential business skills, and turn your innovative ideas into successful ventures.

Our approach is especially relevant to complex, high-value solutions. These solutions could be hardware, software, a service (XaaS), or a professional service (consulting). The differences between these delivery models are more minor than most people realize.

Explore the value of your solution. There are many business options for delivering a solution. Many profitable business models do not match the parameters that interest investors. Is there a business model that can deliver your goals? Participants are expected to bring a product concept to explore with the course topics. The consequences of the basic concepts are more concrete with a personal use case.

The remaining date for the course is on 12/10. Register for the program using the link below or to request for more information.
