IEEE Hawaii Section July ExCom

đź“… The IEEE Hawaii Section will be holding its monthly Executive Committee (ExCom) meeting on Wednesday, July 2nd from 6:30-7:30pm. The meeting will be held at UH Manoa Holmes Hall 244, with an online option available via WebEx.

Dinner will be provided for $10 per person. Please give cash to Matt Sahara on the day of. Students do not need to bring payment.

IEEE Hawaii Section General Meeting

On June 24, 2025, IEEE Hawaii Section hosted its first General Meeting! A huge mahalo to Section Chair for Brianne Tengan for organizing and making this meeting possible. The meeting brought together amazing local Chapters and Affinity Groups to showcase their missions, goals, and big ideas for the year ahead. This meeting was all about sharing opportunities, filling leadership roles, and building a stronger IEEE community across Hawaii. 

IEEE YP x ASHRAE YEA Networking on Tap

On June 13, 2025 IEEE Hawaii Young Professionals collaborated with ASHRAE YEA for a fun Pau Hana at Nighthawk! IEEE Hawaii YP would like to thank everyone who joined for the joint networking event. It was a fantastic turnout, and the team is grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many passionate young professionals across both organizations. The collaboration fostered meaningful conversations and new connections, and we hope to team up again in the near future for more successful events like this one!

Seminar “Women in Tech: Shaping the Future of Engineering and Innovation

On May 19, 2025, the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) groups from the Oregon, Hawaii, and Richland Sections co-hosted a virtual event titled “Women in This inspiring session celebrated the visionary contributions of women who are leading transformative change across engineering and technology sectors. Attendees from across the region gathered to engage in meaningful discussions centered on leadership, innovation, and the evolving role of women in the tech industry. The event featured a keynote by Nita Patel, an esteemed industry leader whose experiences and insights resonated strongly with participants. Her keynote inspired reflection on personal career journeys and the broader importance of diversity in driving technological advancement. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, fostering open dialogue and shared perspectives on building a more inclusive and forward-thinking engineering community.

10th IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference

The 10th IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) International Leadership Conference, held in San Jose, California, on May 15-16, brought together a global community of leaders, technologists, and innovators for two transformative days focused on the future of leadership in an AI-driven world. Quynh Tran, Chair of the IEEE Hawaii Section WIE, participated in the event alongside professionals from across academia, industry, and government. The conference featured dynamic sessions on ethical AI, inclusive innovation, and dismantling barriers in deep tech, all centered on the theme of intentional, inclusive, and impact-driven leadership. Through a mix of technical workshops, strategic leadership tracks, and visionary panels, attendees explored real-world challenges and gained practical tools to lead with purpose in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. The event also served as a valuable platform for networking and identifying future collaboration opportunities to support women in engineering and technology further.

IEEE WIE Collaborative Event on Sustainable Innovation: Women Engineers Driving Global Change

On April 30, 2025, the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Groups from the Oregon, Hawaii, Santa Clara Valley, Central Indiana, Spokane, San Diego, Coastal Los Angeles, and Foothill Sections hosted a collaborative virtual event focused on Sustainable Innovation and Climate Solutions. The session featured Simay Akar Koehler, who delivered compelling insights on the intersection of sustainability, advanced technology, and the global energy transition. Attendees explored key topics including renewable energy and battery storage, carbon management and the circular economy, and emerging trends in climate technology. The event brought together women engineers and professionals from across the country, fostering a vibrant space for collaboration, inspiration, and shared commitment to building a greener, more resilient future. This joint initiative highlighted the strength of the IEEE WIE community in advancing innovation that supports global sustainability goals.

Seminar “Large and Small Scale Energy Modeling for Earth’s Energy Transition.”

On April 26, 2025, IEEE Hawaii Power and Energy Society Chapter spotlighted the global open-source initiative PyPSA meets Earth with a special virtual event titled “Large and Small Scale Energy Modeling for Earth’s Energy Transition.” The session featured Dr. Davide Fioriti, Assistant Professor at the University of Pisa and Co-Director of PyPSA meets Earth, who shared insights into the initiative’s mission to make energy system modeling more transparent, collaborative, and globally accessible. Dr. Fioriti highlighted key tools such as PyPSA-Earth and PyPSA-Distribution, which enable flexible, sector-coupled energy modeling across diverse geographies, including his pioneering work in Africa. The event emphasized the importance of open-source platforms in advancing smarter and more inclusive energy planning, while offering attendees a unique opportunity to engage with one of the world’s most dynamic and impactful energy modeling communities.

Call for Nominations: IEEE 2026–2027 Officer Elections

We are excited to announce that IEEE Hawaiʻi Section is preparing for officer elections for the upcoming 2026–2027 term. We are seeking passionate and committed individuals to serve IEEE Hawai'i Section in the following leadership roles:

  • Treasurer

In addition, both the Industry Applications Society (IAS) Chapter and the Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group will also be holding elections for the same officer positions for the 2026–2027 term.
