Kaimuki Middle’s outreach event – the IEEE Coding Adventure Program
A Fantastic Week of STEM Learning!
We are excited to share the success of the IEEE Coding Adventure Program, which delivered two hands-on coding workshops for middle school students on November 4 and 7, 2025!
Over two exciting sessions, students dove into a world of creativity, problem-solving, and interactive technology: Scratch Game Development:
Students learned the fundamentals of block-based programming, building their very own Dinosaur game using Scratch on Day 1. Makey Makey Experiments: Students explored how everyday conductive materials can control digital interfaces, sparking curiosity and hands-on discovery.
Micro:bit Programming: Participants also gained beginner-level experience working with microcontrollers, learning to program LEDs, sensors, and simple outputs.
Game Showcase & Awards:
On Day 2, students applied the coding skills they learned on Day 1 to create an even more exciting dinosaur-themed game. They also gained valuable experience in communication and confidence-building by giving a one-minute presentation to showcase their projects. Our IEEE volunteer judges reviewed all submissions and selected the Top 3 winners—each receiving a $30 Amazon Gift Card in recognition of their outstanding creativity, problem-solving, and game design! Congratulations to our three winners: Bryon Chu
Hikaru Choi
Hajin Lee
Impact & Participation:
29 students on Day 1 and 25 enthusiastic middle school students on Day 2 participated—showing incredible imagination, teamwork, and excitement for STEM. Their energy truly made the workshops come alive!
This program was made possible through the dedication, energy, and teamwork of volunteers from:
• IEEE Hawaii Power and Energy Society Chapter
• IEEE Hawaii Women In Engineering
• Society of Women Engineers – Hawaiian Islands
We also extend our sincere thanks to IEEE Region 6, Mostafa Mortezaie, and the IEEE MGA Surplus Fund for supporting these STEM outreach activities. A big mahalo as well to IEEE TryEngineering and Angielique Parashis for providing amazing Educational Activities promotional items—the kids absolutely loved them!
Special thanks to Kaimuki Middle School and Samantha Kumagai, NBCT, for welcoming us into your wonderful library and helping make this event possible. Your commitment, resources, and encouragement helped create a truly unforgettable learning experience for our students—empowering them to explore, create, and dream bigger in STEM.
We love seeing young minds discover their potential—and we’re excited to continue offering more hands-on learning opportunities to inspire the next generation of innovators!
