🌞 IEEE Hawai‘i Members Tour AES West O‘ahu Solar-Plus-Storage Project ⚡
On October 14, IEEE Hawaii Women in Engineering (WIE) members with other IEEE Hawai‘i IEEE Hawaii Section members had the opportunity to tour AES Hawai’i’s new West O‘ahu solar-plus-storage facility in Kapolei — the company’s first project on O‘ahu to integrate both solar generation and battery energy storage.

Located on 66 acres of University of Hawai‘i System of Hawai‘i land, this innovative project delivers 12.5 MW of clean energy supported by a 50 MWh battery system. The project will help reduce O‘ahu’s fossil fuel use over its lifetime — a major step toward achieving the state’s 100% renewable energy goal by 2045.

During the visit, IEEE members learned about the project’s technical design, system operation, grid integration, as well as its community partnerships supporting local agriculture and education at UH-West O‘ahu.

Mahalo to AES Hawai‘i for hosting us and for their continued leadership in advancing Hawai‘i’s clean energy future through projects that strengthen grid reliability, sustainability, and resilience. 🌱
